This film tells the story of one of the programs featured in the film Building Community, Building Hope, the Magnolia Community Initiative in Los Angeles, California.

The Magnolia Place Community Imitative is based on a hope and dream: That the 35,000 children and youth, especially the youngest ones, living in the neighborhoods within the 500 blocks of the Magnolia Catchment Area, south of downtown Los Angeles, will break all records of success in their education, health, and the quality of nurturing care and economic stability they receive from their families and community. The network of partners is working to unite the county, city and community to create sustainable change for families. It accomplishes this by promoting and strengthening individual, family and neighborhood protective factors through increasing social connectedness, community mobilization and access to needed services

The six and a half minute film features leaders explaining the Magnolia Community Initiative’s goals and practices, and shows partners working together as part of a learning community, using data and creating ‘micro experiments’ to improve community outcomes. Families are shown participating in a variety of initiative-sponsored activities and programs, along with the ‘warm hand offs’ between service providers that help community members receive the help they need.

The Magnolia Community Initiative serves a community of some 110,000 people in a five-square mile area of LA. It grew out of a strategic planning process implemented in 2001 by the non-profit Children's Bureau of Southern California. It now involves 75 different agencies working together. The vision of the program is that everyone in the Magnolia Place community works together to ensure that they and their neighbors live well and prospers. The film Building Community, Building Hope: Magnolia Community Initiative portrays how partners are working together and working differently as they seek to achieve that vision.
