Have you ever wondered why you often find multiple hairdressers or coffee shops lined up on the same street?
Surely it's not a smart idea to set up right next to your competitor...?
So why does it happen?
Well! There are 3 reasons, and the third might surprise you!
Okay, so why do we see multiple hairdressers for example on the same street?
I did some digging, and this is a concept known as clustering.
Reason number one: Customer Convenience.
Having similar businesses in close proximity can actually benefit customers.
Let's say you're looking for a specific product or service.
If you see multiple options available on the same street, it saves you time and effort from having to travel to different locations.
This convenience factor makes it more likely for customers to choose from these clustered businesses.
Reason number two: Synergy and Collaboration.
When businesses of the same type cluster together, they create an environment of synergy and collaboration.
This means that neighboring businesses can work together to attract more customers and create a thriving community.
They can collaborate on joint marketing efforts, organize events or promotions together, and even refer customers to each other when one business is unable to fulfill a particular need.
This collaboration strengthens the overall appeal of the area, making it even more attractive to potential customers and benefiting all businesses involved.
Now, onto reason number three: Competitive Advantage!
Yes, it may seem counter intuitive, but being close to your competition can actually be beneficial for businesses.
When businesses of the same type are clustered together, they create what's known as a shopping district or a specialized market.
This concentration fosters healthy competition and encourages businesses to improve their offerings, pricing, and customer service to stand out from their competitors.
It creates an environment where businesses constantly push each other to innovate and provide better value to customers.
Research has shown that clustering can lead to better overall performance for the businesses involved.
Studies have found that when similar businesses cluster together, they tend to attract a larger customer base and generate higher revenues compared to businesses located in isolation.
So, despite being in close proximity to their competitors, these businesses can thrive and grow due to the increased exposure and competitive environment.
Personally, I find it crazy, but hey, it works!
