This presentation addresses the determination of effective lengths of columns using alignment charts consistent with the effective length method in Appendix 7 of the 2016 AISC Specification. Building upon earlier lectures which addressed Euler buckling of columns and the basis of the flexural buckling provisions included in the AISC specification, the idea of an effective length factor is described in more detail and a procedure is introduced to determine the effective length factor for columns and various types of steel frames.
