Gone for a Soldier 1/2: The Professionals ~ Philip Donnellan (1980)
Philip Donnellan (9 February 1924 ~ 15 February 1999) was an English documentary film-maker. Described in his Guardian obituary as "one of the greatest of all documentarists." He worked with the BBC for over four decades, producing around 80 documentary films and programmes, most reflecting working-class lives.
This film is Donnellan's ambitious (and at the time controversial) two-parter exploring the history of the British military from Waterloo to Belfast (‘how they lived, and why they died’), and Gone For a Soldier does nothing to disguise its anger towards the military top brass or the whole business of war. Pieced together from ordinary soldiers’ own diaries, letters and songs, the programme attracted a barrage of criticism on broadcast and it sadly marked the beginning of the end for Donnellan at the BBC.
