The opening to A Goofy Movie (1995) as aired on The Disney Channel in 2010.
Commentary
"We just watched the opening to A Goofy Movie as it aired on The Disney Channel in 2010. In this video we saw a DIRECTV screen giving information about the movie, a Disney Channel ID and Disney Channel Movie intro followed by the complete opening sequence of film, often referred to by many as Max's dream. This video also includes a Disney Channel Movie bumper following the opening. All these were included to give you a real sense of what it was like to watch this back in 2010 when it aired.
In the channel ID and the opening to the Disney Channel movie, you can see the frantic and kinetic nature of the on screen graphics used by the Disney Channel in 2010. Constant movement and fluid like transitions are hallmarks of this style and are clearly visible here. These are designed with the idea that kids have short attention spans and constant movement helps keep them glued to the channel and engaged. This is a style that has now become prominent in animation as well.
The film featured is A Goofy Movie, a follow up to the Goof Troop TV series. But the first thing you may noticed is a much higher quality of animation that it’s TV predecessor. That's because this was a pet project of Jeffrey Katzenberg, who was studio president at the time. Unlike a DuckTales movie, which came out 5 years earlier and had marginal animation at bets, the animation on this film was high quality as Katzenberg wanted to show the potential of these TV to movie spinoffs.
Upon it's release, the film itself didn't do all that well at the box office. But that may have more to do with internal studio politics at Disney which had led to the resignation of Jeffrey Katzenberg before the film was even released. It is said Disney didn't put much marketing behind the film and only released it in a minimal number of theatres. In later years it gained such a following Disney made a sequel called An Extremely Goofy Movie (2000).
This broadcast of the film is from the year 2010, when the Disney Channel was #2 in the overall cable rankings. ESPN was #1 one. So you could easily that Disney, which also owned ESPN, dominated cable in 2010. All of the Disney networks, including ABC, shared many of their shows and movies at the time. Disney had a synergy in 2010 which it has lost a bit in the last few years.
We ended the video with a look at The Disney Channel Movie bumper. While this was a little more toned down and less chaotic than the ID and the intro, it still had that fluid like movement and fast paced delivery, ending with the familiar Disney Channel logo in the corner.
After watching this video you can get a sense of how youthful the Disney Channel looked in 2010 with its IDs, intros and bumpers. Young voices and young faces dominated those on screen graphics. Only a decade earlier the channel made the decision to target a younger audience and that’s clearly evident in what we just saw.
