Written by and starring a young Jack Nicholson, this existential chase drama traps innocent cowboys in a nightmare of frontier justice. Shot back-to-back with "The Shooting," this Monte Hellman cult classic strips the Western myth down to its fatalistic, dusty bones.

📖 STORY
Three cowboys—Vern (Cameron Mitchell), Wes (Jack Nicholson), and Otis (Tom Filer)—are riding home to Texas. They make the fatal mistake of seeking shelter for the night at a remote cabin, unaware it's the hideout of the outlaw gang led by Blind Dick (Harry Dean Stanton).
At dawn, a vengeful posse surrounds the cabin, determined to hang every man inside. Mistaken for outlaws, the three cowboys are forced to flee for their lives after a violent shootout. With the posse in relentless pursuit, Wes and Vern take desperate, tragic refuge with a frontier family, setting off a chain of events that challenges the very notions of innocence, justice, and survival.
⭐ HIGHLIGHTS
· An Existential, "Acid Western": A key work in the 1960s "acid western" cycle, rejecting heroic cowboy clichés for a stark, bleak, and psychologically tense vision of the West.
· Jack Nicholson's Early Multitasking: Beyond his role as the cowboy Wes, Nicholson also wrote the screenplay and co-produced the film, showcasing his early creative ambition.
· A Pursuit from the Hunted's Perspective: In contrast to its partner film The Shooting, this story is told entirely from the viewpoint of the innocents being hunted, creating relentless tension and moral ambiguity.
· Authentic, Sparse Dialogue: Nicholson's script uses clipped, authentic-sounding cowboy vernacular, creating a powerful sense of realism and inarticulate desperation.
· Cult Favorite Endorsement: Championed by filmmakers like Quentin Tarantino, who called it "one of the most authentic and brilliant westerns ever made".
