When the 30th Infantry Division went into combat in Normandy, their nickname was the "Old Hickory Division". By the time they left, they were known by the Germans as "Roosevelt's SS". This dark nickname is something that became a badge of honor for the 30th Infantry Division and resulted in some modifications to their uniform as seen in an example at The Gettysburg Museum of History.
