Understanding The Impeachment Process

The Stanford community joined faculty panelists—Professors Jack Rakove, Deborah Rhode and David Sklansky—for a conversation about the legal, institutional, and historical context that is the backdrop for the current impeachment inquiry.

Jack Rakove is the William Robertson Coe Professor of History and American Studies and professor of political science and (by courtesy) law at Stanford. He has written numerous articles on the history of impeachment and was a witness to the House Judiciary Hearings on The Background and History of Impeachment in 1998.

Deborah Rhode is the Ernest W. McFarland Professor of Law and the Director of the Center on the Legal Profession. She worked as counsel to the House Judiciary Committee during the impeachment proceedings against President Bill Clinton and authored a 94-page committee report on the constitutional grounds for presidential impeachment.

David Sklansky is the Stanley Morrison Professor of Law and Faculty Co-Director of the Stanford Criminal Justice Center. He has written widely about the impeachment inquiry against President Trump and been interviewed as a legal expert in recent weeks by the media.
