The French Resistance is often portrayed as an organized guerrilla force from the very beginning of World War II — armed, trained, and ready to fight.
The reality was far more complicated.
In this episode of Improvised France, we explore the forgotten early phase of the Maquis during WW2 before the Normandy D-DAY Landings on June 6th 1944— when most were not fighters at all, but réfractaires: young men hiding in forests, mountains, and remote farms to avoid forced labor under the Service du Travail Obligatoire (STO).
These men didn’t flee to fight.
They fled to survive.
Living in makeshift camps, wearing patched civilian clothing, and struggling with hunger, disease, and constant fear, these early groups were unarmed and unorganized. Many actively resisted becoming fighters, fearing German reprisals and collective punishment against local civilians.
Only later — through pressure, repression, recruitment, and necessity — did some of these hiding camps transform into the Maquis units we recognize today.
This video breaks down:
• Why the STO created the Maquis
• What daily life was really like in early forest camps
• Why many did not want to fight at first
• How improvised survival became the foundation of resistance
This is not a heroic myth — it’s the real, human origin of the French Resistance Maquis during WW2.
