Dating back to 3000BC, but the real story has begun around 1500BC. The small island of Delos is one of Greece's most important archaeological sites, with the remains of the most crucial Hellenistic sanctuary to the gods Apollo and Artemis. The whole island was a holy city. The on-site museum has one of the finest collections of ancient Greek sculptures and artifacts recovered from excavations around the island.
The only way to visit the site is to get a day return ferry from a nearby island (Mykonos, Paros or Naxos). There is no accommodation on the island.
Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is noted for its extensive collection of statues.
