Tapanuli Orangutan. The Tapanuli orangutan is the newest great ape on Earth. And the most endangered. When scientists formally described this species in 2017, they didn't just add a name to a list. They announced that a completely separate lineage of great ape had been living in the mountains of northern Sumatra, unknown to science, for millions of years. Its full name is Pongo tapanuliensis, and there are fewer than 800 of them left alive. To put that in perspective, there are more wild tigers in the world than there are Tapanuli orangutans.
