DeAgostini (Fanhome) Millennium Falcon Custom Build - Episode 19.
Welcome back to the desert. Thank you for joining me again.
Well, it’s time. I was originally going to do it, then I thought I’d do it at a later date (after the model was finished) but thought that would never happen anyway so I thought I’d just not do it. I already have everything I need. I even made special equipment to do it…
PAINT!
It’s such a huge task. I know that’s the wrong way to look at it, but right now, it seems like a lot of work to make it look the way I want it to look. Looking at pictures (I have the originals pictures Stephen Dymszo took of the filming miniature. He used Insignia White.), it seems so daunting. But I keep telling myself I only need to do what I feel needs to be done to make it look the way I expect a $15,000 (about what it’s worth to me just in quantifiable terms) model to look like. So, I’m going to make this Falcon look frikken awesome! I cannot do anything half way. It’ll be in-line with the rest of the build, as it should be.
With that out of the way, here’s what I did to get ready:
0:04 - Marker Lights Wiring Harness
2:05 - Things I'd been putting off (for no reason)
5:37 - I painted the inside of the lower hull, including the frame, black. A few reasons; it will provide some light-blocking, it unifies the surface (since details here are not important), it looks better with the black mount, and since I painted the upper frame black (since it will be seen), I thought they should match.
5:47 - I was already spraying flat black, so I thought I’d also pre-shade the side panels. Being on the side, they should have good shadows. I also painted the inserts flat black. They will all be detailed later with airbrush and paintbrush.
5:56 - I used a Dremel to “fix” the blast marks. More details I’m going to add with paint. Some of you may know the YouTuber @NightShiftScaleModels. I think he is amazing and my idea is to treat the Falcon like a tank. I’m going to try and use some of his techniques for the weathering and damage. If I can do 10% of what he does, it will look amazing.
6:10 - I also realized I had forgotten to complete the sides of the Falcon. The mandible sides I had done, just not the rest.
6:25 - Since the on/off switch is on one of the side panels and I have a feeling I will lose the remote, I’m going to make the A and B buttons from the control board into physical buttons on the outside of the Falcon. I want them to be discreet. I made the bump just aft of the cockpit tube into one. I’m still debating where to put the second one. There is a good part on the port side, but I don’t want to reach across. Since one button operates the ramp, I will probably disguise it as the circular “hatch” on top of the starboard airlock. This way, I can have the power button, the light switch, and the door-opener easily accessible if I lose the remote (and I need to get off Hoth quickly).
7:04 - The rear “deck” took about 6 hours to complete. Most of that time was spent sanding, scraping, and filing parts. I think I got it down to 3 minutes in the video. I have not yet decided what to do for the engine vents. Should I print them myself? Should I buy the metal ones from Paragrafix? Until I decide, I’ve left off a couple parts that attach to the nacelles.
A nice, relaxing assembly montage starts here.
8:41 - I found several errors in the instructions while building. Some parts were put on incorrectly. If you compare the instructions to the details on the blueprint and in other photos, the mistakes in the manual can clearly be seen. Most of the parts are symmetrical on the port and starboard sides, however, in several places, the instructions tell you to place the part in an incorrect orientation. If it seems off, it probably is. Check the blueprints and any photos you have.
0:04 – Marker Lights Harness
2:05 – Remaining things to do
5:37 – Lower Hull Paint (inside)
5:47 – Pre-shading
