The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) Canada is an inclusive, multi-award-winning approach to grant-making that grows compassionate communities by connecting high school students to social issues, local charities, and philanthropy at a pivotal stage in their adolescence. This video introduces the steps of the program to participating students.
Some questions to reflect on after this video:
1) How do you define community? What does community look like, sound like, feel like to you? Do you feel connected to the communities you belong to? Do you share that "sense of purpose and responsibility"? Why or why not?
2) Chris’ story is based in Toronto/Tkaronto. As part of the traditional territory acknowledgement, we shared the context of the Dish with One Spoon wampum belt agreement made between the Anishinaabe and Haudenosaunee nations. On whose traditional territory do you live and go to school? What are the treaties that govern this land? Why might someone consider the Dish with One Spoon wampum agreement an example of philanthropy? (Check out https://native-land.ca/ to find out about the traditional territories, languages and treaties where you live.)
3) Chris’ team didn’t win the YPI grant for their charity. What are some potential benefits for students and charities who do not come away with the top prize?
