A powerful magnitude 7.3 earthquake violently shook the Santa María volcano webcam in Guatemala on July 17, 2026.
Moments after the shaking begins, dogs can be heard barking in alarm. A loud crashing sound then occurs as the camera and surrounding structure shake intensely.
The earthquake struck near the Pacific coast of Chiapas, Mexico, close to the Guatemala border, and was widely felt across southern Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.
This camera normally provides a continuous view of the active Santiaguito lava-dome complex on the southwestern flank of Santa María Volcano. Instead, it captured the sudden arrival of the earthquake’s seismic waves in real time.
The source of the crashing sound heard during the video has not been confirmed.
Recorded by the AfarTV Santa María Volcano webcam in Guatemala.
