Gustav Stresemann is often considered to be the greatest Statesman of the Weimar Republic. When he took over the position as foreign minister 1923, Germany was an economically ruined country as well as a humiliated pariah state. Thanks to Stresemann’s logical and pragmatic thinking, he managed to catapult Germany back onto the world stage within just a few years. He warmed up to France, settled the question of the Western borders, made Germany join the League of Nations and formally renounced war. As long as Stresemann was there, the hopeful prospect of “peace in our time” seemed to be within reach. Unfortunately, after his untimely death, things took a turn for the worse. In this video, you’ll learn everything you need to know about this extraordinary person, his transformation from a monarchist nationalist to a peaceful republican and his achievements.
