Estonia celebrates its 107th anniversary of independence on February 24, 2025. This day marks the declaration of independence from Russian rule in 1918, when the Estonian Salvation Committee issued the Manifesto to the Peoples of Estonia, proclaiming the country as a sovereign democratic republic.
Although independence was declared in 1918, Estonia had to defend its freedom during the Estonian War of Independence (1918–1920) against Soviet Russia and Baltic German forces. Victory in this war led to the signing of the Tartu Peace Treaty on February 2, 1920, where Soviet Russia recognized Estonia’s independence.
After a period of independence, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union in 1940, followed by Nazi Germany during World War II, and again by the Soviet Union until 1991. Estonia restored its independence on August 20, 1991, during the Singing Revolution, a peaceful movement that played a key role in regaining freedom.
Today, February 24 is celebrated with flag-raising ceremonies, a military parade, concerts, and public events across the country. In 2025, Estonians continue to honor their freedom, culture, and resilience, reflecting on their journey as a proud and independent nation.
