In May of 1939, delegates from France, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, and England gathered at Broadcasting House in London and standardized the pitch of every musical instrument on Earth at 440 Hz. The frequency they replaced had governed European and American concert music for eighty years. Verdi had called the alternative mathematically preferable in 1885. The mathematical system that produces it has been in the acoustic literature since 1713. The conference took place three months before the declaration of war on Germany, with Nazi-aligned delegates at the table, and was ratified not by musician consensus but by manufacturing — American instruments built to the new standard were distributed everywhere, and every musician who wanted to play with others had to match them.
The Stradivari violins in Cremona were analyzed by the International Institute for Violin Making. Their optimal resonance corresponds to middle C at 256 Hz — the A that produces is 432. Those instruments were built before 1737. They have not changed. What changed was everything manufactured after 1939. Before that conference, more than 175,000 European church bells — tuned instruments carrying specific frequencies to populations across centuries — had been confiscated and melted in the First World War. The knowledge required to replicate them did not survive intact. Eight vibrations per second is the distance between what was and what is now. This video asks what those eight vibrations were doing, and why the people who understood it spent decades trying to get them back.
