St. Marguerite Bourgeoys | Feast Day January 12
Early Life & Vocation Marguerite Bourgeoys was born on April 17, 1620, in Troyes, France. At the age of 20, during a religious procession, she looked upon a statue of the Virgin Mary and felt a profound call to abandon the world and consecrate herself to God. She joined a local group of women dedicated to teaching poor children.
Mission to Canada In 1652, the Governor of Montreal, Monsieur de Maisonneuve, visited France looking for a teacher for the new colony. Marguerite volunteered. The Virgin Mary confirmed her choice in a vision, saying, "Go, I will not forsake you." She arrived in Montreal in 1653, becoming a co-foundress of the city.
The First School & "Mother of the Colony" Marguerite was a pioneer. In 1658, she opened Montreal's first school in a stable given to her by the governor. She also welcomed the "King's Wards" (women sent from France to marry settlers), helping them establish homes. Because of her care for the settlers and her efforts to build a community of faith, she became known as the "Mother of the Colony."
The Congregation She founded the Congregation de Notre-Dame, a community of uncloistered sisters who could travel freely to teach and help people, rather than staying inside a convent. This was a radical idea for the time. The community received official approval in 1698.
Death & Sainthood Marguerite died on January 12, 1700, after offering her life in prayer for a sick young sister (who recovered). She was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982, becoming Canada's first woman saint.
