Amongst the corn and soybean fields of Nebraska lie hotbeds of biodiversity, playa wetlands. In spring, a single playa wetland may be filled with a myriad of migratory waterbirds, stopping over to rest and refuel in route to their breeding grounds. If you visit the same playa just a few months later, the wetland may be completely dry, with its exposed soil cracking in the heat of summer.
Over the past 150 years, many playas have been drained or filled in to make way for agriculture. However, the playas that are left continue to provide globally important habitat to migratory birds and a wide variety of other plants and animals, in addition to providing recreational opportunities to the people of Nebraska.
Follow along with Ted LaGrange, the Nebraska state wetland program manager, as we learn about Nebraska’s playas. See how playas benefit a wide variety of different wildlife species in Nebraska and beyond and hear from the people who are working to conserve what’s left of these highly altered ecosystems.
