She ran straight outside through her dog door. This five-pound chihuahua chased a full-grown wolf down the street. The wolf ran away. From that night Bella became that puppy's protector, raising her, teaching her, loving her. They played together every day, slept curled up together every night. As the puppy grew things started seeming strange - her howl didn't sound like a dog, her eyes stayed wild, her teeth were different. By six months she was massive, bigger than any dog I'd ever seen. That's when it hit me - she wasn't a husky mix, she was a wolf, a real wolf pup. And that night months ago, that wolf on our porch wasn't trying to attack, it was her mother coming to get her baby back, but my chihuahua had chased her away. One morning the wolf was just gone, disappeared through the fence. Bella searched everywhere crying. A week later I saw them in the yard - the wolf fully grown and beautiful, and beside her another wolf, her mother. They walked to our glass door. The young wolf put her paw against the glass, Bella put her tiny paw on the other side, touching through the glass, one last goodbye.
