March 5th, 2011. Undefeated 20 year old Canelo Alvarez takes on Ricky Hatton’s kid brother "Magic" Matthew Hatton, for the vacant WBC World Super Welterweight Championship. This was the first world title opportunity for both fighters.

Prefight records; Alvarez 35(26)-0-1, Hatton 41(16)-4-2.

Going into the fight, Canelo hold notable victories over Jose Miguel Cotto, Carlos Baldomir & Lovemore Ndou. On the other hand, Hatton has a commendable win over Ben Tackie.

From the opening bell, Alvarez displayed amazing boxing skills to outclass the courageous Brit en route to become the new WBC World Super Welterweight Champion via a lopsided UD12.

All 3 judges scored it 119-109 for Alvarez.

In the 7th frame, Hatton hit Canelo during the break and when the favor was returned he deliberately went down on one knee which caused referee Lou Moret to take a point from Canelo.

With less than 50 seconds left in the 10th, Hatton landed an intentional low blow which Canelo retaliated with a left hook and Hatton once again hit the canvas on his own accord in a possible attempt to earn another point deduction but this time Moret did not fall for it.

If not for the deduction in the 7th, Canelo would have won every single round.

Although dominated, Hatton to his credit displayed his tremendous fighting heart and toughness despite being dominated by the rising Mexican star.

Since winning his first world title Canelo continued to achieve further success in his career and went on to win world titles at Light Middleweight, Middleweight & Super Middleweight.

On May 2019, Canelo Alvarez will take on “The Miracle Man” Daniel Jacobs as the first defenses of his WBC World Middleweight & WBA Super World Middleweight Titles. As for Jacobs, it will be the first defense of his IBF World Middleweight Championship.
