Описание: James Clark Ross landed on Possession Island in 1841, naming the island as he took possession of Victoria Land in the name of Queen Victoria of Great Britain. This act is pivotal to New Zealand's claim to the Ross Dependency. The island is rarely visited by scientists, despite being the site where Antarctica was geologically recognised as a continent, and also the location where the first living vegetation was discovered in Antarctica, contrary to the opinions of botanical "experts". It is a popular tourist destination, despite the extraordinary difficulty in making a safe landing.
