Hip-hop is arguably the most important musical invention of the last 50 years, but it's still pretty deeply misunderstood. It uses new, innovative forms of musical complexity, challenging structures that other genres take for granted, and it's taken a long time for music theory to catch up to what rappers are doing, but we're finally starting to develop some good models to explain exactly what makes hip-hop such a unique, vibrant art form, and at heart, a lot of it comes down to the concept of flow, or lyrics as a musical instrument. Let's talk about it!
