Prasanna Venkataraman is an accomplished Carnatic vocalist known for his deep-rooted classical approach and refined musical aesthetics. Born and raised in Mumbai, Prasanna was the only child of his parents. His introduction to music began at the tender age of six under the guidance of Seethalakshmi, a close friend of his mother and the mother of renowned Carnatic musician Bombay Jayashri. Recognizing his potential, Seethalakshmi guided him in his early lessons before recommending him to T.R. Balamani, a legendary teacher who has nurtured many successful musicians. Under Balamani’s tutelage, Prasanna developed a strong foundation in the art form, learning the nuances of Carnatic music with discipline and sincerity. In 2005, as his passion for music deepened, he moved to Chennai the cultural hub of Carnatic music while simultaneously pursuing an M. Tech. in Electrical Engineering at IIT Madras. This transition provided him with greater exposure to the rich Carnatic tradition. In Chennai, he sought advanced musical guidance from Sangita Kalanidhi T.K. Govinda Rao, a revered musician and scholar. Interestingly, Govinda Rao had once taught T.R. Balamani, making him a natural choice for Prasanna’s further training. At the same time, Prasanna was drawn to the artistry and concert presentation skills of Sanjay Subrahmanyan, one of the leading Carnatic vocalists of the time. Although both gurus had distinct musical instincts and styles, Prasanna found value in learning from both. While Govinda Rao instilled in him a systematic and traditional approach to music, Sanjay Subrahmanyan guided him in the art of structuring and conceptualizing concerts, a crucial skill for any performing artist. His performances have been well-received at prestigious venues and festivals, where he has impressed audiences with his keen musical sensibilities and adherence to traditional values.

This krithi, Muthuswami Dikshidar praises Balasubrahmanya, the youthful form of Lord Murugan. He describes him as eternal, pure, enlightened, and liberated, embodying divine knowledge. Dikshidar also praises him as the beautiful spear-wielding warrior, the teacher of Vedantic wisdom, the protector of the gods, the rider of the peacock, and the embodiment of endless divine bliss. It is believed that singing and meditating on this krithi with devotion can help devotees receive the Lord’s blessings and fulfill their wishes.

I worship the auspicious young Lord Balasubrahmanya, who is like the divine wish-fulfilling tree ( Kalpakavriksha) for his devotees.

He who delights the heart of the blue-throated Lord Shiva and who is adorned with the eternal qualities of purity, wisdom, and liberation.

He who carries the spear as his weapon, who has a beautiful form, and who is skillful in explaining the inner meaning of Vedanta. He who is the incarnation known as Guruguha, the brave and noble son of the supreme Goddess Parashakti and of the forehead-eyed Lord Shiva. He who protects the hosts of gods such as Brahma, and who is associated with the cosmic illusion made of the five elements. He whose vehicle is the peacock, who has a beautiful divine body, and who is an endless stream of unsurpassed bliss.
