Did you know that milk can cause anemia, and the maximum amount of milk that is safe is 24 ounces per day? I’m Dr. Carole Keim and I’m here to tell you the three ways that cows milk causes iron deficiency anemia.
The first is that milk is filling, and children who drink 24oz or more of milk just don’t have enough of an appetite to eat healthy, iron-rich foods.
The second way is that calcium competes with iron to be absorbed in the gut.
The third is that cow’s milk is irritating to the human gut. It was made for baby cows, not for humans. When we drink cow’s milk we get tiny micro-bleeds in our intestines, which causes us to lose small amounts of red blood cells and iron throughout the day.
If your child drinks a lot of milk, give me a call. I can examine your child and do a blood test at home and tell you if your child is anemic. The added value of having a house call for anemia is that we can spend the time to talk about your child’s diet, come up with ways to treat your child’s anemia, and prevent it from coming back in the future.
