"We are following with great concern these developments in Syria, and we reiterate our close follow-up of what is happening on a daily basis. As I mentioned a short while ago, Egypt always supports state institutions. And certainly the more state institutions are empowered, the better it is - and that does not leave any vacuum to be filled on the ground by any other organizations or parties."

6. SOUNDBITE (French) Abdoulaye Diop, Malian Foreign Minister:
“I think the images we see of the situation, the treatment inflicted on the Palestinians, are unacceptable. I think it shocks the human conscience. We think that, emotions aside, it's important for a political process to secure a foothold. And we've said it, we need dialogue, we need an immediate ceasefire, and we need to preserve the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. We also need to move quickly and concretely towards the solution of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. This has been Mali's position.”

STORYLINE:
Egypt's foreign minister and his Malian counterpart discussed developments in Syria and the Palestinian territories during a meeting in Egypt on Sunday.
Egypt's Badr Abdelatty held a joint news conference with Abdoulaye Diop following talks.
Abdelatty said Egypt was closely following the developments in Syria, speaking as the war-torn country dealt with a surprise advance by insurgents.
"Egypt always supports state institutions. And certainly the more state institutions are empowered, the better it is," Abdelatty said.
"That does not leave any vacuum to be filled on the ground by any other organizations or parties."
The Syrian military rushed reinforcements to the country’s northwest and launched airstrikes on a major city Sunday in an attempt to push back insurgents who seized the country’s largest city of Aleppo in a surprise offensive in recent days.
The insurgency, led by jihadi group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, launched their campaign on Wednesday with a two-pronged attack on Aleppo and the countryside around Idlib, before moving toward neighboring Hama province.
Diop meanwhile said the developments in the Palestinian territories are "unacceptable," urging the acceleration of the two-state solution.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking around 250 hostage.
Some 100 captives are still held inside Gaza, around two-thirds believed to be alive.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed at least 44,429 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were combatants.
Israel says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.
The war has destroyed vast areas of the coastal enclave and displaced 90% of the population of 2.3 million, often multiple times.
Diop added that his country shares understanding and friendship with Egypt, that has sent about 1,000 soldiers to bring stability to the West African country.
