-Critical minerals underpin the modern economy—powering clean energy, advanced technologies, and defence. Australia is rich in reserves, but China dominates the mid-section of processing and a large bulk of downstream markets, e.g., EV and solar panel production.
-By contrast, U.S. defence needs account for less than 5% of global demand. It is commercial markets—not defence—that shape supply chains, and the small defence market cannot justify the huge investment required to de-risk from China.
-Australia thus faces a strategic conundrum: how to strengthen its role in global supply chains without destabilising its economy. History warns us—Canada’s failed processing policies among them—that missteps carry serious economic and geopolitical costs.
-Conclusion: with the PM’s upcoming meeting with Trump next month, playing the “critical minerals card” will be a high-risk move.
