The Internet of Things or IoT is all about creating a network of connected devices. What do IoT devices do?
• They can have sensors to collect data from a physical environment. This type of data is called telemetry data.
• They can receive commands that tell them to interact somehow with physical objects. To do this they use things called actuators.

IoT devices form an IoT network that we can use to create smart businesses by collecting telemetry data about whatever physical environment is relevant to our digital business. Common types of telemetry data include:
• Office Space Activity
• Manufacturing Space Activity
• Transport Activity
• Location Tracking Activity
• Urban Activity
• Consumer Activity
• Research Activity
• Environmental Activity

But how can IoT be part of a greater digital business solution?
A primary reason we create IoT applications as part digital transformations is to collect lots and lots of telemetry data that the IoT app passes back to data science systems, such as big data, machine learning and AI systems. These systems then use this data as input to produce different forms of data intelligence that we can use to improve both human decision-making and automated decision-making.

Examples of how data science systems can use IoT telemetry data to improve decision-making:

• A big data system can process and analyze large volumes of different types of telemetry data to filter out irrelevant information and provide meaningful analysis results to human decision makers.

• A machine learning system receiving regular streams of telemetry data can constantly learn from this information as it processes more and more telemetry data over time. This then allows it to produce more meaningful analysis results for human decision makers, and further enables it to continually refine those results.

• An AI system can process, analyze and learn from streams of telemetry data that can also act as input into its automated decision-making. This could then allow the AI system to independently issue commands back to the IoT devices, based on the decisions it makes.

IoT can be used by your digital business solutions to connect with physical environments relevant to your line of business and to enable you to stay in close contact with activity occurring in those environments as they continue to stay active and change over time.
