At the height of Reconstruction, Black farmers owned more than 14% of all farmland; These farms weren’t just sources of sustenance—they were symbols of independence, community, and hope. Over time, however, systemic inequities, land dispossession, discriminatory policies, and unequal access to resources drastically reduced that number.
Today, less than 1% of farmland in the U.S. is Black-owned.
At The Common Market, we’re committed to supporting Black growers and producers—to keep farmers farming—helping to strengthen their businesses through initiatives like values-based procurement, forward commitments from institutions, and infrastructure loans to support wholesale readiness.
