The National Research Council recently announced the release of a report about the new framework for K-12 Science Education, identifying the key concepts and practices that all students should learn. The framework offers a new vision for K-12 education in science and engineering, and embodies a significant shift in how these subjects are viewed and taught. The framework will serve as the basis for new "next generation" science education standards, and will also inform the work of curriculum and assessment developers, researchers, and teacher educators.

Helen Quinn is a professor of physics at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and served as the chair of the committee that wrote the National Research Council Framework for K-12 Science Education.
