Every gas discharge lamp – which includes fluorescent lamps – requires a lighting ballast to safely start and regulate energy to the lamp. Since the lamp itself has no way to regulate energy, it would almost immediately burn out if you tried to run it without a ballast.
This is true of compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs, just as it is with any other type of fluorescent. But unlike commercial fluorescent lights, CFLs for use in the home as incandescent bulb replacements come with integrated ballasts, or CFL ballasts that are built in.
Other CFLs, though, do not include these integrated ballasts, which means you must connect them to an external CFL ballast. As with any type of lamp and ballast combination, you need to make sure the CFL ballast is designed to run your specific CFL.
To find the right ballast, you’ll need to know the lamp wattage and base type you’re running, as well as how many you’ll be running. A ballast catalog should then be able to show you what ballasts can run those configurations.
Optionally, on Lighting Supply’s website at www.LightingSupply.com, you can look at our 2-pin or 4-pin base CFL ballast pages. Our short descriptions will provide a snapshot of what each ballast runs and can help you quickly narrow your search. We also have filtering options in our left-hand column.
Once you find a ballast whose description looks right, make sure to check the spec sheet to ensure its compatibility with the CFL lamp or lamps that you’re running.
Still stuck? Give our friendly customer service team a call for help with finding and ordering the CFL ballasts you need.
