Prepare for a truly stirring musical journey to Northern Italy! 🏔️ In this video, I perform an improvisation on the powerful Südtirol Hymn, "Auf zum Schwur Tiroler Land" (from the Gotteslob hymn book, No. 847), live from the magnificent Metzler organ of Bozen Cathedral in Northern Italy.
This improvisation begins with the whisper of the organ's softest string stops, slowly building, note by note, to a breathtaking crescendo. Experience the full thunder of this incredible instrument as we unleash its 32' reed and the bombastic Chamade Trumpet, culminating in a truly majestic and deeply emotional sound.
It's a performance designed to capture the spirit and grandeur of this beloved regional anthem, showcasing the incredible dynamic range and power of the Bozen Cathedral organ.
This powerful performance is an excerpt from the full video tour of the Bozen Cathedral organ that we recorded in April 2025! Keep an eye out for the full tour coming soon, or check our channel for more deep dives into incredible instruments. Thank you to Tobias Chizzali, Cathedral Organist, for arranging this recording session for us and to Andreas Pürtinger for filming!
Organ: Bozen Cathedral Organ (Südtirol, Italy)
Hymn: Auf zum Schwur Tiroler Land (Gotteslob No. 847)
Context for "Auf zum Schwur Tiroler Land"
The hymn "Auf zum Schwur Tiroler Land" (Gotteslob No. 847), while deeply cherished by many in the Südtirol region, carries significant historical and political weight, making it quite controversial for some.
Its origins trace back to a time when Südtirol (South Tyrol), a predominantly German-speaking area, was ceded from Austria to Italy after World War I. The hymn's lyrics are often interpreted as a strong expression of Tyrolean identity and a desire for reunification with Austria. This has led to its adoption by various South Tyrolean nationalist and separatist movements over the decades.
As such, its performance, especially in public settings, is often seen by some as a political statement rather than a neutral cultural expression, sparking debate due to its association with historical grievances and ongoing discussions about regional identity and sovereignty within Italy.
