This was our third annual Easter weekend trek to the 60’ cross at Mount Lyn Lowry (5 miles round trip, 1,350’ of elevation climbed). You can access this trail at mile marker 451.2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Waterrock Knob) near Waynesville, NC.
The first 0.5 is a steep 500’ ascent to Waterrock Knob—part of this is paved and part is rocky/sandy. Just shy of the summit, you’ll veer left to head 0.5 miles to Browning Knob. Another 1.5, and you’ll be at Mount Lyn Lowry. This unmaintained trail is very technical with steep ups and downs, rocks/roots/blow downs, but very rewarding along the way with gorgeous views and the final open field at the cross.
We’ve continued past this before to Plott Balsam, but we didn’t have time to bag that peak today. We were carrying weight as we continue to prep for the AT: David and I had 30# packs; Abigail and Madilyn had 18# packs; Naomi and Gideon had 12# packs.
