The Chandeleur Islands are a vital part of the Gulf of America’s world-renowned fisheries, surrounded by more than 5,200 acres of the most diverse seagrass beds in the northern Gulf and the only marine seagrass habitat in Louisiana waters. 🌱🐟
These underwater meadows provide essential nursery grounds for juvenile fish and shrimp and support species such as tarpon, spotted seatrout, snapper, Gulf sturgeon, and lemon sharks, the only lemon shark nursery in the northern Gulf.
The seagrasses also attract dolphins, sea turtles, and the occasional manatee, helping keep this ecosystem healthy and productive. Protecting the Chandeleur Islands protects our fisheries, marine life, and the future of Louisiana’s coast.
