Your personal training certification (and your exercise science degree) might be worthless

Andrew Layne, PhD, CSCS, USAW L2, holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology from the University of Florida and a Master's in Sport Performance from East Tennessee State University. He is the owner of Layne Performance, a private performance training facility in Gainesville, FL. The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) published a brief review on the knowledge of personal trainers. And it is pretty terrifying.
Personal trainers tend to be overconfident in their knowledge of exercise prescription, leading to them working outside the scope of their practice. They are also prone to believing myths about exercise and nutrition, and these mistaken beliefs tend to persist despite formal education!
Are there good personal trainers out there? Of course. But a personal training certification--and perhaps even a BS in Exercise Science, don't guarantee that your trainer knows what they are doing.
Dr. Layne discusses these issues and gives advice on continuing education, finding good sources of information, and how to react when we find out we were wrong about a previously-held belief.
The original article is titled "CORRECTING MISCONCEPTIONS IN THE KNOWLEDGE OF PERSONAL TRAINERS" by Dan Jolley.
