After receiving advice these instructions are how I now proceed.
Engage brakes on the wheel chair.
Stand up and face your chair or bed.
Place both hands on the chair and take a few steps back.
Go down one your knees, one knee at a time (Strong side first, my left side) with your hands supporting you on the chair.
Walk backwards on your knees until you can bring your hand/s comfortably to floor.
From being on your hand/s and knees its much easier to crawl backwards/forwards into a more roomier position to lower yourself prone onto the floor.
Lower your hip first, (Strong side first, my left side) then down onto your elbow and from there you’ll find it much easier to lower yourself prone to the floor.
Once on the floor, do give yourself a full minute’s rest before you reverse the process to get back up again. It’s not a race remember!
And the rest is not for you, it’s for your muscles!
So to get back up from the prone position, role onto your side again.
Bring yourself up onto your elbow first, (Strong side first, my left side) then your hand so you’re sitting on one hip.
From there you can role onto your hand/s and knees
Once there you can crawl back to the chair/bed then (Strong side first, my left side) use your hands to help lever yourself back up.
Since I had a stroke I have a fear of the floor where I find it very difficult to move. I deliberately put myself on the floor so that I can conquer that fear. I breathe hard. I am slow but it can be done and my confidence improves.
I can do this and I will.
Life after stroke and dealing with disability. As I practise I am getting better at this.
While standing I face the wheelchair.
First I let myself down to the floor on the knee on my strong side (left). Then I move backwards until I can drop onto all fours. Next I start to crawl doing a small turn. I then lower myself onto my stronger left side. I lay down to rest and steady my breathing. Then I get back onto my left side and then onto all fours. I move around still on all fours until I face the wheel chair. I lift my stronger left leg and then use it to push up into standing position. After pulling up my right leg I turn until I am in position to sit down. I sit and the exercise is complete.
These videos show me getting up from the floor. It is not easy but a useful exercise for me. It helps me to build confidence and strength. It has caused no pain or injury. I am happy to find I am able to get up.
I was disabled by stroke. I'm learning to take care of myself. I recently created this YouTube channel. It is part of my search to improve the quality of my life. It is an experiment to show how getting up from the ground can be done by someone disabled.
I am not a professional. I am learning how to use my YouTube channel, how to make movies, how to tell my story. This is a record of my attempt to achieve these things. Maybe what I do can be useful to others with difficulties to overcome.
My right leg and arm do not work so well. Sometimes I need help but I want to do things for myself as much as I can. It is not always easy but I am happy that I do have some success. I want to learn and to share my wins. I think people who have had stroke can help one another by telling their story. It is important to discover what is possible.
No need to worry for me. I am cared for but also I am allowed to make an effort to improve. Thank you for this. We learn from our mistakes and so find ways to make things better. There is much to do and much to improve. I am still finding my way.
So far success is smiling on me. Confidence is taking the place of fear. Giving myself time to breathe, being relaxed but careful is beginning to produce results. This is not an intense exercise routine. Movement is slow, controlled and steady. It just feels better than it did before. I am making progress. Learning from others is helping.
I have been trying to go forward, to move stroke and disability away from the central position in my life. There is so much out there and I want to be a part of it. I share my life as it is and wish you well.
We are learning movie making, how to use a YouTube channel, you are welcome to follow us as we make mistakes, discoveries and hopefully entertaining movies.
Experiment
Using this YouTube channel is another thing to learn. There is much to discover.
The only way to get success is to try.
So far I have not only improved my technique but I have also gained confidence. Look out for more videos showing my progress.
My latest adventure is looking at Amateur Dramatics.
