Описание: Mt. Kirkjufell (463 m) is the most prominent mountain in Grundarfjörður and a landmark of the fishing town. The mountain is free-standing and referred to as the most beautiful mountain on the Snæfellsnes peninsula - some even say the whole of Iceland. At least it is the most photographed mountain. The formation of Mount Kirkjufell took millions of years. During the ice age the mountain, located exactly in the middle of two glaciers, was shaped by glacial erosion.

The name Kirkjufell means Church Mountain as it is considered to resemble a church. And the mountain next to it, Stöðin, is said to resemble a congregation hall.

Danish sailors, who frequently visited this area in the olden days called this dignified mountain "Sukkertoppen" or the Sugar Top. And the lower mountain they called the coffin. These names did not stick ;)

For the past few years, Mt. Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall have become the most popular place for a photo stop here in Grundarfjörður. You will see crowds of visitors with tripods and cameras taking photos like the one above, i.e. from this angle with the waterfall in front.

The name of the river is Kirkjufellsá river, which runs from a volcano called Helgrindur. There are 3 waterfalls in this river, all of which have the same name, Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall.
Earlier on you could walk down to the waterfall, but that path has now been closed due to increased traffic.

Grundarfjörður is on road 54 on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes peninsula - 185 km from Reykjavík.

Góra jest wolnostojąca i nazywana najpiękniejszą górą na półwyspie Snæfellsnes - niektórzy mówią nawet o całej Islandii. Przynajmniej jest to najczęściej fotografowana góra. Formacja góry Kirkjufell zajęła miliony lat. W epoce lodowcowej góra, znajdująca się dokładnie pośrodku dwóch lodowców, została ukształtowana przez erozję lodowcową.

Nazwa Kirkjufell oznacza Church Mountain, ponieważ przypomina kościół. A góra obok, Stöðin, podobno przypomina salę kongregacyjną.
Duńscy żeglarze, którzy w dawnych czasach często odwiedzali ten obszar, nazywali tę dostojną górę „ Sukkertoppen ” lub Sugar Top. A niższą górę nazwali trumną. Te nazwy się nie przylgnęły;)

Od kilku lat Mt. Kirkjufell i wodospad Kirkjufellsfoss stały się najpopularniejszym miejscem na robienie zdjęć w Grundarfjörður. Zobaczysz tłumy zwiedzających ze statywami i aparatami robiącymi zdjęcia takie jak powyżej, czyli z tego kąta z wodospadem na wprost.

Nazwa rzeki to Kirkjufellsá, która wypływa z wulkanu Helgrindur. W tej rzece znajdują się 3 wodospady, z których wszystkie mają tę samą nazwę, wodospad Kirkjufellsfoss.

Wcześniej można było zejść do wodospadu, ale ta ścieżka została teraz zamknięta z powodu zwiększonego ruchu.
Grundarfjörður leży przy drodze 54 na północnym wybrzeżu półwyspu Snæfellsnes - 185 km od Reykjaviku.
