The C-47 Display at the National WWII Museum. At the museum, the C-47 is prominently featured in the Sovern-Helms Boeing Center, often suspended as if in mid-flight. This display allows visitors to appreciate the sheer scale of the aircraft that dropped thousands of paratroopers into Normandy on D-Day and over the Rhine during Operation Varsity.
The C-47 was the military modification of the civilian Douglas DC-3. It was rugged, versatile, and capable of operating from short, unpaved runways.
Key Capabilities
Troop Transport: It could carry 28 fully armed paratroopers.
Cargo & Medevac: Designed to haul up to 6,000 pounds of cargo, it could also be configured to hold 18 stretchers for evacuating wounded soldiers.
Glider Tug: It was the primary aircraft used to tow CG-4A Waco gliders into combat zones
