In today’s Court of Justice hearing, Taylor Gay Valdez steps in front of Judge Boyd on 2022 CR 6339 — expecting a straightforward plea on a reduced DWI… until her attorney calls it a “mistake,” and Judge Boyd shuts that down fast: “You didn’t make a mistake. You made a choice.”
The State proceeds on a lesser-included offense of Driving While Intoxicated (Class B misdemeanor) (up to 180 days in jail and up to a $2,000 fine). Valdez confirms she reviewed discovery and signed the court admonishments, understands she’s giving up her trial rights, and agrees to a plea deal involving deferred adjudication.
But the tone changes when Judge Boyd digs into the facts: Valdez admits two of her children (ages 7 and 4) were in the car. Judge Boyd presses her about the decision to drink (“shots”) after driving to SeaWorld, then getting behind the wheel — and reminds her how easily this could have ended with dead children or someone else killed in the crash. Valdez says the week she spent in jail was an “eye opener,” but the judge keeps the focus where she wants it: accountability and parenting.
✅ Judge Boyd’s Orders / Rulings (Taylor Valdez — 2022 CR 6339)
✅ Plea on DWI (Class B misdemeanor) as a lesser-included offense
✅ 1 year deferred adjudication
✅ $500 fine (probated)
✅ Restitution (if any) to Gerardo Farias (as stated in court)
✅ Ignition interlock for half the term
✅ DWI education class + Victim Impact Panel
✅ 50 hours community service
✅ 40 hours can be waived if proof of COVID vaccination is provided (not required by the court)
✅ Remaining hours can be waived with proof of parenting classes (certificate must meet the court’s date requirement)
✅ Monthly field visits for 3 months (then may discontinue if no issues)
✅ Regular UA testing for alcohol
✅ Proof of employment due within 3 days
✅ Employment restriction: no work as a home healthcare provider or with minors
✅ Waiver of appeal enforced (court did not grant permission to appeal)
Before moving on, Judge Boyd leaves Valdez with a blunt reality check: your kids can’t raise themselves — and your choices decide what happens next.
