Welcome to Norfolk Video Footage. In this video, we explore the fascinating origin story of Bernard Matthews — the man who built one of the UK’s biggest turkey businesses, starting right here at Great Witchingham Hall, Norfolk.

🏡 The Beginning
In 1950, Bernard Matthews bought 20 turkey eggs and a second-hand incubator for £2.50. Three years later, in 1953, he purchased the 36-acre Great Witchingham Hall estate for just £3,000. He and his wife lived in just a couple of rooms while the rest of the Hall was used to rear turkeys — a humble start to what would become a massive poultry empire.

🏭 Factory Expansion
By 1959, demand had outgrown the mansion. Bernard began building his first dedicated turkey processing factory on the adjacent disused airfield, completed in 1960.

In the early 1970s, as Bernard Matthews Foods launched new products like the Turkey Breast Roast, a second, larger facility was built next to the original one to handle increased production. Over the following decades, the site continued to expand with modern wings and equipment, reflecting evolving food safety standards and growing global demand.
