Two Valley women who had planned a yearlong countdown to a five-day New Year’s getaway found themselves stranded Sunday after flights out of Puerto Rico were canceled when a U.S. military operation in Venezuela disrupted Caribbean air travel.
Anita Gates and Carol Meza said their return flight was among at least 150 canceled departures from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, the region’s busiest hub. With no rebooking available, no rental extension, and dwindling lodging options, the friends spent the day walking Old San Juan, searching for a place to stay.
“Our goal was to just be here and enjoying beautiful Puerto Rico,” they said, recalling a trip that included hiking trails and visits to local beaches. “We thought we’d give it some time. They’ll probably give an update in a couple hours.”
