It was a favourite thing of composers early in the 20th Century to compose music, especially suites, in the style of previous eras. A real nostalgia trip. Nearly two years ago I presented one such offering by Ernst von Dohnányi, and it turned out to be my most watched presentation ever, by about a hundredfold over anything before or since. Weird.
This suite by the Italian composer Vittorio Rieti is every bit as nostalgic, fun, and enjoyable to listen to as that other. His use of complex rhythms, especially juxtaposing patterns of different length or out of phase between the hands, is particularly satisfying. The quavers fly by each in their own time with little regard for how many of them may be counted in any particular span of time.
