Detours in place as construction begins on Hay

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. -- A major bridge in Johnstown closed Wednesday and will be shut down for several months.

The city has set up multiple detours for drivers to use to get around the construction until the bridge is replaced.

Construction of the Haynes Street Bridge is set to begin Wednesday, which could cause chaos for drivers as this is a major artery in and out of Johnstown.

Detour signs have been set up for drivers to follow as the bridge is being reconstructed.

The Haynes Street Bridge is part of Johnstown's bridge replacement project, and officials said it's more than ready to be renewed.

"It's outlived its usefulness," Public Works Director Darby Sprincz said. "It's starting to deteriorate."

Work on the bridge includes replacing the existing two concrete arch structures which carries the bridge over the Stoneycreek River, as well as roadway work, sidewalks and lighting.

"It's going to look different, we're trying to keep aesthetics of all the bridges we're putting in similar, so it may resemble the one on Napoleon Street, or the one on Walnut Street, the Martin Luther King Bridge," said Sprincz.

Many travelers go over the Haynes Street Bridge and will need to follow this new route:

The eastbound portion of the detour will begin at the intersection of Haynes Street and Napoleon Street. It will continue to Johns Street, then to Washington Street.

It will then continue along Washington Street to Clinton Street, then to Bedford Street.

The detour will end at the intersection of Haynes Street and Franklin Street.

The westbound detour will begin at the intersection of Haynes Street and Bedford Street and will continue along to Vine Street, then to Franklin Street and will end at the intersection of Haynes Street and Franklin Street.

Construction is expected to last through November, and work on the $4.1 million project will be completely finished by December.
