India has 8 nuclear power plants currently in operation. Together, they run 25 reactors and produce about 8,880 megawatts of electricity. This makes up around 3% of the country’s total power supply. These plants are located in different parts of the country.
The biggest one is Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu, with two large reactors. Kakrapar in Gujarat has four reactors, including two newer and more powerful ones. Rajasthan’s plant near Rawatbhata has eight reactors, making it the largest in terms of number. Tarapur in Maharashtra is one of the oldest, still running four reactors.
Other plants include those in Narora (Uttar Pradesh), Kalpakkam (Tamil Nadu), and Kaiga (Karnataka). Most of these use a type of reactor called PHWR, which uses heavy water to help with the nuclear reaction. Some use light water reactors, including imported designs from Russia.
India is also building more reactors. Eleven new units are under construction in places like Haryana and Tamil Nadu. The country plans to increase its nuclear power to meet rising electricity needs and reduce dependence on coal. By 2047, India aims to generate 100,000 megawatts of nuclear power, using both current and new types of reactors.
