Gidon Markusovich Kremer (1947-)
Latvian-born German violinist and conductor. At the age of four, he began learning violin from his father and grandfather. At the age of seven he entered the music school in Riga, and at sixteen he entered the Moscow Conservatory. He won the 1969 Paganini International Competition and the 1970 Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow. In 2001, he received the UNESCO International Music Award for his efforts in nurturing and discovering young performers.
