The one-shot drill is all about getting on and off the shooting mat as quick as possible safely.
Prior to doing this drill, practice getting the rifle and on and off you back until you are generally comfortable with the procedure. It would be helpful to watch videos in slow motion of biathletes or better yet have an experienced biathlete or coach show you how to get the rifle on and off your back. Remember the rifle must always be pointed down range or up in the air when getting the rifle on and off your back. The rifle can only be removed from your back while on the shooting mat.
This drill can be done while dry firing or with live ammunition. Preferably do this drill twice a week dry firing and at least once a month with live firing at the range. This is a great drill do with a group on the range, as it can be a fun competition to see who can get their shot off quickly and hit the target. The One-Shot drill will help to develop speed in shooting. Doing this drill well and maintaining good shooting fundamentals is a key to having fun and success in biathlon.
1-SHOT DRILL PROCEDURES:
Prone Shooting
Start with the rifle on your back standing behind the shooting mat. Start by opening the snow cover on the rifle barrel (above your head). Step onto the mat and remove the rifle from your back. Get into the shooting position by dropping to your knees and placing a magazine in the chamber. Attach the rifle sling to the cuff on your arm and get into the prone shooting position. Take your shot remembering the shooting basics we have been working on (breathing, sight alignment, trigger control and follow through). DO NOT EJECT THE EMPTY SHELL CASING as you don’t want a live round in the chamber when finishing the drill. Get up from the shooting position and place the rifle on your back being sure to keep the rifle pointed down range or up in the air. Get back off the mat and stand behind the shooting mat ready for the next shot. Repeat the procedure for ten shots opening and closing the snow cover and replacing the magazine in the chamber between each shot. Get to the point where you can get on and off the matt and hit the target withing 15 to 20 seconds. It will take some practice.
Standing Shooting
Follow the same procedures as the prone one- shot drill but getting into the standing position. Each shot should take from 10 to 15 seconds.
