OF ROOTS AND SEA

Описание: This dance production was inspired by mangroves, a critical yet threatened ecosystem between land and sea. Mangroves are vital biodiversity hotspots, and provide a range of benefits to human communities: protecting coasts from erosion, reducing the risk of natural disasters, sequestering carbon, and contributing to food security. Mangrove ecosystems are places of contrasts and dualities: the visible and the submerged, the rootedness of trees and the ebb and flow of tides, harsh saline environments that offer a rich habitat for thousands of species. The choreography “Of roots and sea” introduces us to the vegetal underwater world of mangroves (0’15s-3’56s), the importance of oxygen and respiration for marine life (4’15s-7’46s), the role of mangroves as fish nurseries (7’52s-10’27s), their symbiotic interaction with crabs (10’30s-12’30s), the human-induced threats to mangroves but also the hope that humanity acts in the right direction in this United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (12’37s-17’20s).

“Of roots and sea” was produced in partnership with UNESCO, the European Marine Board (EMB) and its ”EMBracing the Ocean” artist-in-residence programme, the University of Montpellier and its ”Sea and Coast” programme, the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD) and its Planet@liment project, and the Pew Charitable Trust. “Of roots and sea” premiered in November 2022 at the Earth University, UNESCO, Paris.

Ce spectacle de danse a été inspiré par les mangroves, un écosystème essentiel mais menacé, situé entre terre et mer. Points névralgiques de la biodiversité, les mangroves offrent toute une série de bienfaits aux communautés humaines : elles protègent les côtes de l'érosion, réduisent les risques de catastrophes naturelles, séquestrent du carbone et contribuent à la sécurité alimentaire. Les écosystèmes de mangrove sont des lieux de contrastes et de dualités : le visible et l'immergé, l'enracinement des arbres et le flux et le reflux des marées, des environnements salins difficiles qui offrent cependant un riche habitat à des milliers d'espèces. La chorégraphie "Of roots and sea" nous fait tour à tour découvrir le monde végétal sous-marin des mangroves (0'15s-3'56s), l'importance de l'oxygène et de la respiration pour la vie marine (4'15s-7'46s), le rôle des mangroves comme nourriceries pour les poissons (7'52s-10'27s), leur interaction symbiotique avec les crabes (10'30s-12'30s), les menaces d'origine humaine qui pèsent sur les mangroves mais aussi l'espoir que l'humanité agisse dans la bonne direction en cette Décennie des Nations Unies pour la restauration des écosystèmes (12'37s-17'20s).
