Описание: The Spanish Air Force commission in charge of selecting the aircraft showed a preference for the McDonnell Douglas F-4E, but financial constraints meant that the older, more limited F-4C had to be accepted. The aircraft chosen had been built in 1964 for the USAF and served with the 81st FW in Great Britain. They began arriving in February 1971, and by 1972 the thirty-six aircraft had been completed. Designated C.12, the aircraft were retired in 1989. After years of frenetic activity, the RF-4C and F-4C reached 55,000 flight hours in approximately 36,200 sorties.
Towards the end of 1988, eight RF-4Cs were purchased from the 123rd RW of the Kentucky National Guard, which were quickly received and the 123 Squadron (radio call sign "Titan") was reborn.
The RF-4Cs, which were to continue to perform reconnaissance work, as Spain had no effective aerial reconnaissance device. To reinforce the existing RF-4Cs, another batch of six RF-4Cs were purchased from the 192nd RW and fitted with in-flight refuelling probes to match the systems available on the Spanish Air Force Boeing 707 (KC-707).
During 1989, all F-4Cs were decommissioned, totalling 69,772 flight hours in 18 years of service and with the loss of 7 aircraft. Anecdotally, Spain was the last country to decommission this variant of the Phantom.
Between 1999 and 2001, the RF-4Cs were decommissioned and in February 2002 the remaining aircraft were grounded.
