IS THIS ALT SEASON? HERE'S WHAT THE DATA SAYS

The ingredients are there, but there are a number of factors that need to be considered to determine if we have a full blown Alt Season. TBH, I’ve been skeptical about whether or not we would ever see anything that resembles a traditional Alt Season again, and this PA may answer that.

In this analysis, I’ll look at the many factors that need to be considered to determine if we are in a confirmed Alt Season in the historical sense, or if this is just an exit rally coming off of BTC's recent ATH. I’ll also show you what the catalysts are that triggered this rally and what’s fueling the continued momentum for ETH and Alts.

Let’s dive in.

First and foremost, there is no question that the emerging trend of Corporate ETH Treasuries have been a catalyst for ETH’s breakout and the 3 pieces of crypto legislation working thru Congress this week are creating a tailwind. Specifically, the Genius Bill has a lot of ramifications for banks waiting for the green light to jump into the cryptoverse. That will begin with stable coins using the Ethereum blockchain, and investors are excited about that.

I asked ChatGPT for some insights on what it takes to validate a bonafide Altseason and here’s what it said. To be clear, it wasn’t 100% accurate about specific price levels so I made some edits. Because of the amount of institutional adoption of BTC, I’m also (still) not confident that BTC.D will go as low as it has during prior Altseasons. That will certainly be something to watch.

Whether this rally develops into a fully confirmed Altseason or not remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: This is a trader’s market and it’s a great time to make money on ETH and select Alts. Choose wisely…

✅ Key Indicators of a Bonafide Altseason
Bitcoin Dominance (BTC.D) Drops Sharply

A sustained decline in Bitcoin dominance typically signals that capital is rotating into altcoins.

🔎 Current status: As of July 17, 2025, BTC dominance has started to pull back from recent highs (~65%) but remains above the 55% level we saw in December 2024. We’re seeing early rotation, but not full commitment.
✅ Partial signal triggered.

ETH/BTC Ratio Breaks Out

Ethereum often leads the altcoin market. When ETH outperforms BTC, it tends to mark the beginning of broader altcoin strength.

🔎 Current status: ETH/BTC has bounced from cycle lows and is staging a yet to be confirmed breakout from the yearly trend. The real confirmation comes when the macro trend line is flipped. A confirmed breakout above 0.044 would validate altcoin leadership.

Mid- and Low-Cap Alts Begin to Outperform

In true Altseasons, we see explosive rallies across Tier 2 and Tier 3 projects, not just large caps like ETH or SOL.

🔎 Current status: Isolated pumps are occurring (notably in AI and RWA narratives), but sector-wide outperformance is not yet confirmed. Many low-caps are still under water relative to BTC.

Retail Speculation Returns

Retail inflows into meme coins, gaming tokens, and L2 ecosystems are hallmark signs of euphoric altcoin phases.

🔎 Current status: Social volume is increasing, but Google Trends and DEX activity don’t reflect peak retail behavior. Engagement is growing—but cautious.

Altcoin Market Cap Breaks Above Key Resistance

The total market cap of altcoins excluding BTC (TOTAL3) needs to reclaim prior cycle highs and break through resistance with volume.

🔎 Current status: TOTAL3 is approaching a key inflection zone but hasn’t broken decisively above resistance set at the December 2024 high.

Macro + Regulatory Clarity Improves

Altcoins tend to flourish when the broader macro environment becomes less uncertain and regulatory overhang lifts.

🔎 Current status: With crypto legislation advancing in the U.S. (FIT21, Clarity for Payment Stablecoins, etc.) and Trump proposing pro-crypto tax reform, the environment is more favorable than it’s been in years.
✅ Supportive macro tailwinds emerging.

Verdict:
We are in the early stages of an altcoin rotation, but not yet in full-blown Altseason. Traders positioning early in strong narratives—such as AI, RWA, L2s, and staking ecosystems —may have the best reward-to-risk setups.
