On October 13, 2022, the Carnegie family of institutions celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy during a private ceremony in New York City. The event included a tribute to Vartan Gregorian, who cofounded the medal and served as president of Carnegie Corporation of New York for 24 years until his death in 2021.
The world knew Gregorian as a devoted and tireless leader, a lifelong educator, a passionate devotee of world peace, and a champion of philanthropy. In the months following 9/11, he confronted fear with courage, vision, and generosity by introducing a medal.
